"I don't hate you, I just hate your species." --M.W.
I saw Avatar within this awake period, and though it was visually stunning (but throughout, I was disappointed that we had gone to a non-3d showing--my thoughts shifted in and out of "Wow, this would look so cool in 3d...damn.")I disliked how I was continually thrusted into the opinion that humans are stupid.
I have always agreed that humans are stupid--I told my mom on a weekly basis, "Mom, humans are stupid" and she would continuously disagree with my view of the world--and I do not want it to be true, but even arguments about great minds like Einstein or Newton or any of the Roosevelts can be brought down by the minds of many religious leaders, and many dictators. While I do admit that some people are well-intentioned and mean to use what they know to create an advanced and civilized society, many of their decrees decivilize that very same society.
Humans seem to need advancement, need to look for the next great technology to make their lives slightly easier, need to advance their socioeconomic status, need to boost their reputation. But why does any of that matter? Why should someone need to spend most of their days working toward a terminal goal. Humans have reached a point where everything is about advancement, but I ask, "Why can we not take a break and appreciate what we have and what we have had?"
Think of the Germans under the Nazi reign who did not support Hitler, but did not care to internally undermine the system. Instead, they continued living their lives, some profiting on the war, and not giving a notice to the moral challenge that the Nazi party brought up. Can one blame them for saving their lives under a rule that they did not at all agree with? No, they are a part of the problem. Similarly, I am a part of the human problem; I am also stupid, but in a more stupid sense.I'm also a hypocrite; I find most every invention, most every medicine, most every discovery, most every rise to power, fascinating. Sure, I'm smarter than some people in math, but what does that matter.
What does matter is the people in power and the people who crave power. More often than not, the people in power or craving power are those with strong wills who think they know better than the rest of people. Think Napoleon, think Hitler, think Lenin, think Burr.
I have not said near enough about the stupidity of man. But generally, I say for every advancement, it is one stupid step for man, one stupid and repetitive step for mankind. Thanks for the inspiration Mr. Armstrong! I'm scared for the future. Colonizing space is especially fearful. Men have the reputation to take what they want instead of accepting an alternative (colonizing New World), and they will take their time to get it, but it is almost a given that it will happen. America should be a land of the free, but instead it is the land of the people who take land away from you and "allow" you to relocate to a much nicer place in the B-E-A-utiful state of Oklahoma where you can get back at the white man by stealing his money in a casino. The earth is almost a lost cause, but the outlook is good--the world population will start to decline around 2100 (go women who are progressively seeking higher education and personal incomes which keep them from baby-making for a longer period of time!) at a nice (approx.) 7 billion! Humans are awesome! For every advancement, there is a stupid way to use it, and humans are that perfect curious creature to find it.
